Here is a collection of transcriptions of primary documents and sources.
Index to Constable's ReceiptsAs there are a great many names included in the receipts, I have indexed them to aid you in your search.
Some 19th Century Constable's ReceiptsDavid V. James, was a constable of Center District, Gilmer Co., from the mid- to late- 1800's. Among the possessions he left behind was a trunk full of his receipts, which were given to me. While these old documents are not as "vital" to genealogy as birth, marriage, death or land records, there IS a great deal of interesting information in them. The kind of information that can make one's ancestors seem more human and "real". You might say it's a "silver mine" of information!
A note about the transcriptions: many of these receipts were written in pencil, and often on what might be called "scrap" paper. I have done my best to render them exactly as they were written, resisting the urge to edit. So if you notice misspellings, poor grammar, etc., as you no doubt will, please understand that it is as exact a copy of the original as I could make it. My editorial comments are enclosed in brackets.
Another (brief) note: These receipts were all folded, and often there were notes on the outside of the folded paper. When this was the case, I transcribed the outside note first, and tried to leave several spaces between the outer and inner contents. I hope this is clear as you read...
Some Tax Receipts for the Years 1871 and 1872Here are a few tax receipts that were in David James' possession, as it seems they were overdue, and it was his duty to collect on them. Each name was on a separate form, and I have alphabetized them by surname, within each year.
