Normantown Cemetary

This cemetary is located on a wooded hillside just off Gassaway Road in Normantown proper. The cleared and fenced plot contains ten uncarved slabs set up in such a way that I'm sure they mark graves. Based on their arrangement there may be no more than five unknown burials, but possibly as many as ten.

There are a number of double headstones, so this list is only roughly alphabetical. My comments are enclosed in brackets.

About 200 yards up the hill from the cemetary is a little knoll whereon stand several shaped sandstone (?) blocks and slabs, as well as a rough-shaped slab resembling, in appearance and situation, a headstone. None of these has any carving. There is also a white, unpolished, rectangular marble column, about three feet tall, carved on three sides:

DIED
JULY 2, 1880
[italics]Thus sink to rest
the just whom
Christ has blest,
Death brings

peace and heav-
enly rest.

JEMIMA
NORMAN

JAN. 18, 1804
DIED
DEC. 25, 1841
[italics]She welcomed death
not only as a release
from bodily suffer-
ing, but as the

hopes of eternal
happiness

SARAH
NORMAN
BORN
JAN. 7, 1824
[no death date carved]
[italics]Here lies one who

was a kind mother
a true wife;
She was by many
virtues blest,
And piety among
the best.
